  • Sedhel I Fuin (“Silent Night”) in Sindarin 2024

    26 November, 2024

November is the month when we continue our music journey to Northern Europe in "Christmas Brass & Vocal Jazz" that we began in 2021. As our audience already knows, we dedicate this project to the most beautiful mediaeval songs from Scandinavia, Germany, and the Netherlands, in new, bright arrangements for 5 trombones and 5 special guest-musicians. We enrich our winter holiday traditions with new ideas and a fresh approach to beloved songs and writers whose worlds we admire.

From 3 November 2024, the single “Sedhel I Fuin” (“Silent Night” in Sindarin) is available on the music platforms. One of the most famous of all European Christmas songs, alongside O Tannenbaum - the first piece that launched our project in 2021, the melody of “Silent Night, Holy Night” allows us to transform it into an exquisite, elegant winter piece for 5 trombones and 5 voices, arranged with jazz harmonies by Daniel Nikolov (the principal arranger of the Christmas Brass & Vocal Jazz project) and the glorious verses by German poet and calligrapher Alfred Tueting. The unique charm of the song, which cannot help but draw your attention, is due to the language in which the colleagues from the Spectrum vocal band sing: Sindarin - one of the two Elvish languages created by the magnificent linguist J.R.R. Tolkien. The specific sound that glides along the fine line between the familiar and the unknown adds that fairy-tale, mystical element that is at the heart of our project: our admiration for the mysterious and unimaginably power of Nature in its endless cycle, unquestionable  force that we can most strongly feel in the heart of Winter and the North…

The musicians in our 2024 team are coming together at the invitation of the creative director of “Christmas Stories for Brass and Voice” and the Brass Perspectives Association BG, Kristina Dencheva. Our special brand - the five trombones are now performed by colleagues from 4 countries: Mustafa Khalilov (first trombone) - Azerbaijan, Prof. Atanas Karafezliev (second trombone) and Dimitar Stoev (bass trombone) - Bulgaria, Catherine Schule (third trombone) - the USA, and Jorge Nieto (fourth trombone) - Spain. The jazz elements in “Sedhel I Fuin” are entrusted to the colleagues from the Spectrum vocal band, who return to the project in all their glory after 2021. The single Sedhel I Fuin (“Silent Night” in Sindarin) opens a little elvish wicket to our next LP album “Christmas Stories for Brass and Voice: Northern Lights” 2025. Till then listen to our version of this beautiful song, where the music creates a winter fairy tale, lovely and bright like the gently falling snowflakes in an ancient pine wood…

Sedhel I Fuin (Silent Night in Sindarin) - music by Franz Xaviev Gruber, arrangement by Daniel Nikolov, lyrics by Alfred W. Tueting. Performed by trombone quintet: Mustafa Khalilov, Atanas Karafezliev, Catherine Schule, Jorge Nieto, Dimitar Stoev, feat. Spectrum Vocal Band

    ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The Christmas Brass & Vocal Jazz stories by the Brass Perspectives Association BG lead the listeners on a winter journey to Northern Europe through traditional mediaeval Christmas songs from the 16th to the early 20th century, in new attractive arrangements for 5 trombones and surprising musical collaborations. The trombone quintet is the special brand of the project, which always features exactly 10 performers. Our aim is to promote contemporary Bulgarian arrangers and performers of brass instruments in classical, ancient, and popular music in the countries of Northern Europe, where there are established audiences for brass, a cappella pop, jazz, and contemporary fusion interpretations. Since 2023, more and more foreign colleagues - young professionals whose careers are currently linked to Bulgaria - have joined the project. We believe that this way, our music, which you can find on nearly 30 music platforms, will inspire other musicians to seek their unique place on the contemporary European brass scene through bold and surprising collaborations, even for themselves, and will expand the audience interested in our projects.
